The great outdoor experiment

It’s just over a week since I started tracking how much time I and my family spent outside. It’s been interesting to say the least. Just the process of tracking it made me spend more time outdoors. It was lovely to see this experiment resonated with others too after I read this article and wrote about it last week.

Blue skyWhen I was growing up, I remember my mum often saying, “everyone outside” or “its outside time now” or “I’m mopping the floors everyone out NOW”. We just accepted that was normal. Today, not so much.

A few highlights of my week:

1. The weather was gorgeous which meant going outside was an obvious choice

2. School holidays started so the routine was easier to disrupt

3. Some days the kids spent almost the whole day outside – others not so much but it seemed to balance out over the week

4. The dog was the most grateful

5. We went on two family walks/scooters/bike rides with everyone (it has been months since we managed even one)

6. We rediscovered my son’s ‘secret passage’ taking us from a suburban street onto the lush green carpet beside our local creek (stunning and pretty magic)

7. Picnic rugs, bean bags and Sunday papers on the back lawn

8. Worst day I averaged 40 minutes outside, kids worst day was just over an hour

9. Really glad I gave up my gym membership – exercise is so much more nourishing outside

10. I spend a lot of time hanging out and folding washing on the clothes line

Oh, nearly forgot, the most exciting thing was that I weeded an entire garden bed which has been driving me c.r.a.z.y.

How was your week?

  1. Oh, you’ve had to do weeding too!? That’s what I reckon I spent most of my time doing outside and hanging clothes on the line! It’s so hot here, being outside from 10.30 to 2pm is just really tough, we have to wait ’till the sun moves over to the front of the house so the backyard has some shade. My 21 month old loves to be in his wading pool, he loves using the hose and playing with buckets of water. I think we really need a sandpit though!

    • It is hard when it’s so hot with little ones isn’t it? They are always much happier outside. Although I can’t wait for it to get a bit hotter here… went for a walk/run this morning and got rained on. My rediscovered nature-living self actually didn’t mind that either!

  2. What a great idea! My kids love spending time outside and we have a great deck to enjoy some fresh air and shade. We got a family gym membership recently that give everyone access to the outdoor pool and gym it is amazing how much we use the pool over the gym to enjoy being outside.

  3. Glad you enjoyed the week, I hope that you managed to keep going and getting more outside time. Due to school holidays we have been outside heaps. All day spent hanging by the pool = bliss

    • Thanks – It’s cold and miserable here again today – can’t wait for it to get warmer so it’s a bit more enjoyable. The playground yesterday was HARD work in a bitterly cold wind.
